Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and Basilica: what is included?

A “Vatican tour” can mean quite a few things.
Make sure it takes you where you want to go.

01The Museums & Sistine ChapelArt, galleries and Michelangelo’s ceiling

The Sistine Chapel is part of the Vatican Museums visit. Start with a Museums ticket or guided tour, then check the route and meeting point. The Museums have their own entrance, separate from the Basilica.

A useful distinction A Museums tour does not automatically include a guided Basilica visit.

Official Museums tickets
02St. Peter’s BasilicaA working church, with its own access

The Basilica is separate from the Vatican Museums. You can approach through St. Peter’s Square; the Basilica also offers bookable visit options. A paid guided tour is one way to visit, rather than a requirement for every visitor.

Check the fine print Religious events and closures can change a tour’s Basilica access. Security checks still apply.

Official access information
03The domeA separate climb, with stairs to the top

A Basilica visit does not necessarily include the dome. Check for a dome ticket and whether the option uses stairs or the lift for the first section. Even the lift option involves a climb: it reaches the terrace, not the summit.

Before you choose Consider the climb and your comfort with confined stairways. Security screening is mandatory.

04The Grottoes & the ScaviTwo very different underground experiences

The Vatican Grottoes contain papal tombs beneath the Basilica. The deeper Necropolis, often called the Scavi, is a separate archaeological visit that requires a reserved guided tour. A “grottoes” tour does not include it by default.

The word to look for For the archaeological visit, confirm that your reservation explicitly names the Necropolis or Scavi.

05The Vatican GardensChoose the way you want to explore

Check whether the Gardens portion is a walking tour with a live guide or a ride with recorded commentary. Also check what happens afterwards: museum admission does not necessarily mean a guided museum visit.

Read both parts The Gardens format and the Museums format can differ within the same booking.

Back to the places
Do I need a guide to visit the Vatican?

You can book a self-guided Museums visit through the official ticket portal. A guide can help you choose a route and understand what you’re seeing. Start with the level of explanation and group size you want, then compare the exact tour option.

Does “skip the line” include security?

Do not assume that it does. A reserved admission slot and a security queue are different things. The Basilica explicitly requires security checks for dome visitors. Check which queue a supplier’s promise refers to and allow time for screening.

Will a Museums tour include St. Peter’s?

It depends on the option, not just the product title. For example, the City Wonders product in our shortlist offers a Basilica-inclusive group route as well as Express options that exclude it. Even an included Basilica visit can change because of religious events or closures. Read the route in the tour notes.

Is the dome accessible by lift all the way up?

No. The Basilica’s official guidance says the lift reaches the terrace; stairs are still required to reach the summit. Confirm the route against your mobility needs before booking.

Are tickets to the Papal Audience free?

Yes. The Holy See states that official audience tickets are free. A commercial experience may charge for a guide or organisation. Read those services separately from the admission itself.

Why don’t you show a single “from” price?

One listing can contain several routes, group sizes and upgrades. Its lowest headline price may belong to a different visit. We identify the option we’re discussing, then send you to check the total for your dates, party and currency.
